Executive MBAs at Cornell, Queen's and Aalborg using Income/Outcome

Published Date
In 2014, the Cornell-Queen's Executive MBA program exemplified a pioneering partnership between two esteemed institutions: Cornell University in the United States and Queen's University in Canada. This collaboration offered an Executive MBA that leveraged the strengths of both universities, providing a unique educational experience.
A distinctive feature of this program was its innovative use of multipoint videoconferencing technology, connecting Boardroom Learning Centers across major cities in the U.S. and Canada. This approach facilitated a cohesive learning environment for professionals without necessitating relocation.
Our journey with this program began at an Executive MBA conference, where Income|Outcome's business simulation workshops caught the attention of the program's leadership. Dr. Paul Roman, an Associate Professor of Management Science at Queen's University, integrated the Income|Outcome simulation into the program's opening residency.
In collaboration with Dr. Roman and Assistant Professor John Moore, we conducted a one-day workshop for approximately 70 EMBA students at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. This session was followed by a Train-the-Trainer day to equip faculty with the tools to facilitate future simulations.
Subsequently, a similar workshop was held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, engaging 80 students divided into teams. Our colleague, Associate Professor Helmut Hergeth from NC State's College of Textiles, also facilitated sessions, underscoring the program's commitment to immersive, experiential learning.
Feedback from these sessions highlighted significant benefits. Students gained a clear distinction between profit and cash flow, and the simulations provided a holistic visualization of business operations. This comprehensive understanding served as a foundation for the diverse topics covered throughout the EMBA curriculum.
Recognizing the value of specialized facilitation, Dr. Roman and Professor Moore expressed a preference for continued collaboration with Income|Outcome for leading these experiential classes. Their active participation in market competitions and financial exercises, combined with our facilitation, enriched the learning experience for students.
Our engagement with academic institutions extended beyond North America. Aalborg University in Denmark also incorporated our one-day EMBA workshops, complemented by Train-the-Trainer sessions, reflecting the global applicability of our simulations.
The expansion of Income|Outcome workshops in both academic and corporate settings, across various countries, underscores the universal appeal and effectiveness of experiential learning in business education.
