What Is Government Acumen?

Government Acumen is the ability to make better decisions within the unique structures of the public sector. It combines understanding how funds flow and priorities shift, making strategic and compliant choices under constraint, and taking accountability for outcomes.It draws on financial literacy, operational knowledge, and cross-functional collaboration—empowering individuals to align budget decisions with mission success, across fiscal years and organizational boundaries. AND it means developing a working understanding of the rules, restrictions, and flexibilities that govern how money can—and cannot—be spent.
